A couple from Ohio got a real shock after they learned the fetus the wife was carrying was not their child. There had been an IVF(in vitro fertilization) mix-up at the hospital.
Carolyn and Sean Savage wanted a fourth child and had problems getting pregnant because doctors determined Carolyn was no longer fertile.
The procedure was successful, and Carolyn learned she was pregnant. However, her happiness was ruined when doctors told the couple they implanted another couple’s embryo in her by accident.
While the couple was upset, the decision to carry the baby to term was a no brainer. They knew how hard it was to conceive.
Carolyn said they looked at the situation as a gift for another family that they didn’t know existed eight months ago. She said both her and Sean will wonder about the child for the rest of their lives. Although doctors told Carolyn it would be her last chance to get pregnant, she gave birth to the child and handed the baby to her “real parents.”
Shannon Morell who is the child’s biological mother said the emotions women have during pregnancy – to bond with the baby during that time – she never got to feel. She said it’s an empty feeling. Morell said she never got to feel the baby kick or hold the baby after delivery.
It’s been six years since the IVF mix-up, but Carolyn got the shock of her life one day when, at the age of 45, she learned she was pregnant. This time, it was through old-fashion method.
Carolyn said after two decades of no spontaneous conception, numerous ovarian stimulation cycles, over five IVF tries and multiple intrauterine inseminations and the IVF mix-up, she had given up ever getting pregnant.
The couple named their son, Logan.
